A beloved dish by many, with the possibility of endless combinations… chili is a winter staple in the midwest. Often times competitions are held around our area to see who has the best chili, the most unique chili, the hottest chili. While I am not the biggest fan of chili, my husband is. It is one of the dishes he looks most forward to in the cold winter season. I created my chili dish with thoughts of my husband in my mind. This chili recipe is a little spicy and full of flavor. Take a look down below for the recipe and give it a try! You won’t be disappointed!
Recipe serves: 6-8 adults
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 1 hour
Ground beef, 1 pound
Chorizo, [pork or beef] 1 tube
1 Green bell pepper, chopped into bite sized chunks
2 Jalapeño peppers, slice into medallions[de-seed if you want]
1 Onion[white], chopped into bite sized chunks
Garlic, 5 cloves minced
Stewed tomatoes, 24oz worth [I used fresh, but Hunts Fire Roasted works great!]
Spaghetti sauce, one 7.75oz jar[any flavor]
Beef broth, three 10 1/2oz cans
Water, 2 cups
Worcestershire sauce, 3 Tbsp
Paprika, 1 Tbsp
Chili powder, 3 Tbsp
Oregano, 2 Tbsp
Basil, 1/2 Tbsp
Salt, 1/2 tsp
Black pepper, 1 Tbsp
Butter, 1 Tbsp
Vegetable Oil, 1/2 Tbsp
- In a large pot you will want to add your butter, vegetable oil, half of your ground beef, and chorizo. You will want to cook your meat until your ground beef has been browned and your chorizo has been cooked and separated.
- After your meat has been cooked… add in your garlic, onion, green bell pepper, jalapeño pepper. Cook your vegetables until your onion starts to become transparent.
- Next add into the pot your seasonings: paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, oregano, and basil. Give a good stir to combine.
- Now toss in your two cans(or jars) of stewed tomatoes, the whole jar of spaghetti sauce, the three cans of beef broth, the Worcestershire sauce, and your water. Bring your pot to a slow boil and cover with a lid. Let your chili cook for 20 minutes with the lid on.
- Take the lid off of the pot and place the remaining 1/2 of your ground beef [hand crumbled] into the pot. Boil for 40 minutes longer with the lid off.
- Be sure to stir occasionally to avoid food burning at the bottom of your pot. Once your hour of boiling is up, go on ahead and turn off your burner and serve.
A simple recipe to make.. this chili recipe is sure to please those who like their chili on the spicier side. I also wanted to mention that you can add beans to this chili if that is how you prefer it. You can add pre-cooked beans to the pot 20 minutes before the chili is done, just be sure to wash them thoroughly before adding. Also, feel free with this dish to add any toppings of your choosing! Some I recommend are: sour cream, cheese, onions(or green onions), crackers, and avocado, however the choices are endless! You should definitely give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!
